Happiness is...

I decided to try something new this year in art. We always assume that students just like working with paint, paper and other art supplies to create images, designs and to express themselves. I come from a graphic design and art background but that doesn't mean I always like using the traditional mediums to be creative.
This year, our classroom received Chromebooks and many students seemed interested in playing with Google Draw after we had done several activities with it in social and language arts. I took that interest and used an art project I usually do with construction paper (in the past, it has turned out fabulously) and modified it to be used with Google Draw.
I think the results are outstanding. We worked for 3 45 minute periods. The students learned to overlap, copy and paste, add colour, different line thicknesses and to be creative in a totally different way. I even had a student who accidentally figured out how to add colour to the background but it then disappeared. He spent 45 minutes trying to figure it out and then proceeded to show EVERY student in the class how to do it. Good for him for problem solving.
I am completely impressed with the amount of work students put into these images. If you feel like it please provide them with some feedback or comments.

Witches Feet

With the change of our schedule we can't do art on Tuesday's any more. There were a lot disappointed students. Due to the power I have, I decided to postpone science until next week and do art. Here's what we ended up creating. Hope you enjoy the pictures.

Watercolor Painting

Art by Kassy
I found this great project to help kids learn about blending colors using watercolor paints from Art Projects for Kids. I thought what a great activity to try with my grade 2's. Here are some of our pictures.

What's New...

It's been a week, if not more since I've posted on here. One of my students had to gently remind me that I haven't posted anything in awhile. I have to say, she was quite diplomatic about it. Thank you!!
It has been a very busy 3 weeks with Report Cards, Parent Teacher Interviews and then Teacher's Convention. Next week is the last week before Spring Break (although my Spring Break starts in one week. Hooray!!!!). I'll be travelling to warm and sunny Arizona. I can't wait to get away from winter. It just doesn't seem to want to go away.
We've been learning about making healthy choices with our food and learning to incorporate exercise into our lives. I came up with a great idea to incorporate art and healthy eating. So, I brought in several different kinds of fruit for the kids to build 3D structures. I didn't know what to expect and I was pleasantly surprised by the creations the students came up with. Here they are:
 Enjoy!!!

All of the Penguins

I got an opportunity to put up the penguins on Thursday night. It's a good thing because my back went out on Friday. The reports will follow as the students finish them. I love how you can see all of the different sizes and shapes of the penguins.
I wish the streamer wasn't in the way but it was the Valentine Dance the next night.
The Teepee's are an added bonus. Left over display.

Looking forward to the Valentine Craft on Friday.

I can't wait to have the kids make their Valentine Buckets this year. I had a parent donate used black paint cans. They will look fabulous with our craft on them. Keep coming back to see the finished product.

WOW!!!! Painting the Penguins

The heading says it all. Hope you like the photos. My students have done an amazing job on their penguins. I'm blown away by what they did. We will cut them out on Monday. Come back to see the end result.
