When I look back and thought about it, it's really changed and so have I as a teacher.
I hope you enjoy it. It's about 25 minutes long (sorry but it's hard to condense 16 years into 10 minutes)
I just want to start off by saying, my head is full of information and I'm going to try my best to articulate all that I learned these past two days. I attend the Literacy Summit 10 in Calgary put on by the organization Vulnerable Readers.

This summit had come to my area last year but because of a demand, I was unable to attend. It was a shame because attending it twice would have helped to reinforce what I learned this time around. Regardless, I'm happy I went and here is a brief breakdown of what I learned.

Richard Allington's Presentation:

Teacher's make the most amount of difference in a student's school career.

Instruction should be support on sound research

They can have a positive and negative affect on what a child learns and what a child doesn't learn.

Research shows that 20% of children (1 out of 5) will not learn from a teacher

20% of teachers will do a great job of teaching ALL children in their classroom

The other 60% of teachers will do an okay job of teaching

Teachers need between 60 - 90 hours of literacy Professional Development to become effective teachers of reading and writing

Between K - 3 with quality, intensive instruction children learn to read and write. If they struggle with poor teachers, the gap widens and they fall further behind

Programs do not work - quality instruction and trained teachers work

Educational Assistance delivering literacy support does not work

We have the time and resources but we need to stop doing the "fluff" (my words, not his)

Eliminate all those activities that research indicate are largely a waste of time.

• Worksheets

• Round robin interruptive oral reading

• Low-level interrogations

• Isolates skills lessons and skills tests

• Fluency tests

• Unit tests

• Test prep

Pat Johnson - The Essentials of Word Work - Catching Reader's Before They Fall

- I don't do a good job of teaching spelling or word work

- There are 14 principals of how words work - if you want to know them, you can ask me or you can buy her books to find out what they are but every teacher should search them out because it will make a difference to how you teach the process of spelling.

- I do a terrible job of teaching spelling but I will do better from now on, or at least try

• Word Solving involves - Meaning making, syntax and visualizing - all work together

• Sometimes, it's not about accuracy but about taking on a part of a word solving strategy or strategic behaviour.

• Students need to be flexible when solving words - only teaching that the a can have a short or long sound does not help, we need to show several examples of the sound

- Compare the sounds to each other

Lori Jamison - Shared and Guided Reading - Guided Readers: Making the most of an 18 minute guided reading lesson
I always learn from Lori and today was no exception.
- It's okay to reread a book, poem, stories, recipes, non-fiction books over again because there is always something you can teach from the books.
- Shared Reading - work on the same texts for 4 or 5 days (plan to use one text for all fives days of the week but you're only going to do 10 minutes of work)
• Day 1 - Introduce text - work on comprehension
• Day 2 - look at lines of text - maybe rearrange the sections, read them and resort the lines in order - text matching
• Day 3 - Focus on words - antonyms, homonyms, synonyms, sight words, words that rhyme
• Day 4 - Focus on letters - word work, blends with certain letters, digraphs, spelling pattern (not too many just enough to expose them to it) Perhaps 1 of the 14 principles of how words work.
• Day 5 - Perform the lines of text together - have them fill in a sheet with the missing sight words - have them complete the missing sounds you worked on - something to do where you might be able to assess what you've worked on.

Matt Glover - Writing and Conferencing with Students

- one of my favourite presenter because he began his keynote with:

- Conventions vs Composition --> Conventions are important but they are not the most important part of writing and as teachers we tend to focus the most on them. He showed us several examples of writing where conventions were not used but the composition of the writing was outstanding.

• STUDENTS NEED TO CHOOSE WHAT THEY WRITE ABOUT - STOP GIVING THEM PROMPTS OR MAKING THEM DO WHAT YOU WANT THEM TO DO - ALLOW THEM TO MAKE BOOKS (PICTURE BOOKS) OF WHAT THEY WANT TO WRITE ABOUT

- if your going to teach a unit of study, for example on factual fiction - you need to have a STACK of books to help support this type of writing and it needs to be visible for kids to use.

- don't teach the structure or type of writing if you can't find quality published books - eg. Why are we teaching journal writing? Can you find published pieces of journal writing? NO! How about book reports? Can you find published pieces of book reports? NO! They are called book reviews, so teach book reviews and have published examples. Then you shouldn't have kids writing journals. Besides they are painful.

- When conferencing with students you need to have a mentor text that is published to show an excellent example of writing. Walk around with it when you confer.

- You also need to have examples of your writing and student samples. Your writing is an example of you or an adult trying the idea and the student sample is that of a student trying it. Don't use student samples as the best example because it isn't always correct.

• Mini-lesson is 10 minutes - so you don't always have to read the whole story or model writing during this time - it should be short and to the point so then kids can go and try the teaching point.

Conferencing with students - Matt Glover

• Do some research with child before hand - ask them to read it to you, ask them about their story, etc. Get some initial information about their writing.

• Name their strength - compliment them on that strength

• Decide on the Teaching Point - Do you want to work on composition/conventions/process of writing?

• Teach - Mentors - Published texts, Teacher Writing, Child's writing - this should not be - "Great work!" or "I like how you...!" It should be an opportunity to teach the child something about writing which means you need to know somethings about what your expecting from the child in regards to the unit of study you're working on.

• Conferences should be about 5 - 7 minutes long

Well, there it is. It's a lot and now I've got to put all that I learned into practice. Looking forward to having more of a thinking classroom. Sometimes I attend conferences and I come away with feelings of inadequacies but not this time. It confirmed that I was on track with some of my writing but needed work in some areas.

I know have some resources and placed to go for teaching words better and I've got some ideas of how to weave it all together. It's going to be a struggle but we'll get through it.

We've been working on Exploring Liquids for the past couple of weeks and I wanted to see what they knew. I love Padlet for several different reasons but one of them is to quickly get a snapshot of what they know and don't know about a topic. Yesterday I had them tell me at least 3 things they knew about liquids. Please comment below if you wish.

It's that time of year again when I introduce the word Perseverance. As part of the Rock Investigation, I use the Rock Holder activity to see which students persevere and which have difficulty. I want students to always try their best and in grade two some really don't know to do that. By introducing perseverance, my goal is to get students to keep trying until they are successful with their task. We revisit tasks and discuss how they could be improved. As I've been this year, "You're never done!" A student actually repeated this to another when he said he was done. You could see the grin on his face as he was saying it to another boy.

The Rock Holder task involves this:

• They are only allowed one piece of paper

• No glue, tape or staples

• The rock holder must be stable. Should support a rock either by itself or with one hand.

• I'm watching to see who can persevere and what questions they are asking me.

This task is possible for grade 2's to accomplish with some perseverance.

Here's what my students came up with this year.

This post originally appeared on Ms. Brown's Grade 2 Class
April Brownhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12705102738457690079noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1046239454918681645.post-36254082902173785642015-06-13T09:50:00.001-06:002015-09-13T19:04:42.609-06:00Happiness is...

I decided to try something new this year in art. We always assume that students just like working with paint, paper and other art supplies to create images, designs and to express themselves. I come from a graphic design and art background but that doesn't mean I always like using the traditional mediums to be creative.

This year, our classroom received Chromebooks and many students seemed interested in playing with Google Draw after we had done several activities with it in social and language arts. I took that interest and used an art project I usually do with construction paper (in the past, it has turned out fabulously) and modified it to be used with Google Draw.

I think the results are outstanding. We worked for 3 45 minute periods. The students learned to overlap, copy and paste, add colour, different line thicknesses and to be creative in a totally different way. I even had a student who accidentally figured out how to add colour to the background but it then disappeared. He spent 45 minutes trying to figure it out and then proceeded to show EVERY student in the class how to do it. Good for him for problem solving.

I am completely impressed with the amount of work students put into these images. If you feel like it please provide them with some feedback or comments.

Today's task was to work on covering a 3D object but there was certain criteria they needed to follow.

1. They couldn't have any overlapping paper.

2. They couldn't use tape or glue.

3. The paper needed to cover all of the shape.

From the pictures above some of them had some really good strategies. It is amazing is watch and see how they process the information and eventually come up with an answer. My goal in doing this task is tenfold. It's about so many things that I hope to reflect below.

As I looked back on the images today and reflected again on this task (I've done this several times over the years) it is about space, and of course shape, but it's more than that. It's also about measuring, area and perimeter and knowing the shapes on the object, how large or small they are, knowing you've got enough paper to cover the whole side/object. Being flexible in your thinking, trying something new, being creative about how something worked or didn't work. It's definitely about problem solving and perseverance. It's about being entrepreneurial and engaged. I could go ove but I'm not going to. It's like a puzzle and the more I'm learning, our brain likes puzzles and problems to solve. It is such a rich task. I guess that's why I come back to it each year.

This will lead into our investigation into building a paper box/net to hold a penguin. It also lends itself into learning there is not one way to build a net for a 3D object. Does the cube always need to make the traditional 't' shape? Or is there more than one way to build a net for any 3D object? We'll explore these questions in the going days.

The students have begun working on asking themselves some deep thinking questions while they read fiction and non-fiction books. This also transfers into our science and social studies work. A goal of mine is to get them to be inquisitive about what they are reading and wondering about.

We have just begun this process and here is the first of some of the deep thinking questions they came up with. We were working from an interesting book called "If..." by Sarah Perry.

It gives you the opportunity to think outside the box about what if something were different than what you know it to be. Here are some of the images from the book and the questions the students asked.

I used Google Draw (It was their first time using it) and all I could hear was Oooo and Awwww about how cool it was. This idea of technology is so new and exciting. You tend to forget the power it has. What will these kids be able to do in the future, if this is what they can do now?
I hope you enjoy the questions. I know their spelling is TERRIBLE and hardly any of them use the question mark but I think it gives us an opportunity to go back and edit what they wrote on another day.
Enjoy!

The students were introduce to Mystery Bags today but before they could find out what was in the bag they had to think about a good quality question to ask. Here are the questions they came up with. I think some of them worked hard to think about questions that did not require a yes/no answer. Scroll along to see the rest of the document.

My class has spent the last 3 weeks working on this project about body image. If you've never read this story you are truly missing out. The photographer decided she wanted to document images of a child's best part of themselves.

I've had this book for a number of years and just never did anything with it until this year. The students were given the task to come up with their best body part and explain why it was the best. We looked at the photos and built criteria around what the photos needed to look like. They had to figure out how to make them black and white thought the photo app. After they were finished their writing they went to work editing and then practicing their reading aloud.

Please remember this is the beginning of October when this has been recorded. As a teacher I was struggling with doing this project, not because of the task bug the time commitment and the time away from regular instruction and building routines. After listening to them read and seeing their writing on their blogs I think I have quite a bit of information to assess them on and help them improve upon. I am confident that an improvement will be made by the end of the year with their reading and writing. But for now I think they did a terrific job for this time of the school year. I hope you enjoy. There are 4 short videos and one more to be made.
Sitting at Big Blue (my guided reading table) during art and I'm listening to some conversations going on and the topic of perseverance comes up.

Student A: I was watching my grandpa help my uncle with our horses and he looked like he was having a hard time. I turned to my uncle and said, "It really looked like you were persevering"

Me: Did your uncle look at you strangely because you used that word?

Student: Oh yay! He thought it was strange that I knew what that word was.

Me: Thinking to myself, I think it's great you know the word and you can identify when you see someone practicing it. Smile appearing on my face.

Then everyone had a story about how their parents looked at them funny when they used the word. I started to question the discussion when Student B said his five year old sister used the word. Hmmm...might have to think about that one.

The point being, you shouldn't shy away from teaching them important words because they can identify it and use it correctly in their everyday life. I think I'm going to persevere and continue to teach them some bigger words.

I figured if I wanted you to come to the blog I better post some stuff for you to read. We got through the first week of school, boy was I tired Friday, and we're into the second week.

Your child is settling in and learning the classroom routines. Last week we looked at translating our name pattern's into actions, sounds and on paper and with colour. More work is going to be needed.

This week we'll be working on building routines for Reader's Workshop and Word Work. We are up to 8 minutes of reading stamina. Yay!!! You may have heard that we collected rocks today for our Rock Investigation. We'll be working on Perseverance, tomorrow you can ask your child what this word means. In our rock unit, we'll be learning how to sort, work with mass, learn how to persevere and build a plan for breaking rocks. Don't tell them about this because it's a surprise for the end of the week. In math we're working on learning how to subitize (when you look at a collection you can identify it without counting) and seeing the parts inside the whole number. For example, the whole number is 6 but the parts might be 3 + 3, 2 + 5, etc.

In writer's workshop they are learning to write from their own ideas and begin to organize their writing on a 5 Finger Planner.

Looking forward to posting some photos.

Have you ever asked your students to answer this question? You might want to give it a try, I think you would be pleasantly surprised by the answer. I know I sure was. A couple of weeks ago, I asked my grade twos this question (It comes from the Inspiring Education document from the Alberta Government) and I wanted them to video tape each other and post it to their blogs (Yes.. you read that correctly, I have my students video tape themselves all the time). If you are interested in going to take a look here are the videos on How Do I Learn.

After reviewing the video, I picked those I felt the students needed to hear because of what was said. Here is what the students said:

We then talked about, what evidence shows your learning? I was blown out of the water by what these little people came up with. Yes... all my reinforcing of vocabulary has paid off.

You might want to try asking your students, how they learn and have a conversation about it one class. It think it would make for an interesting discussion.

Earth Day was this past Tuesday and our class decided to collect our garbage and recycling to see how we can reduce our global footprint. The students discovered they throw away a lot of plastic bags as well as wrappers from processed food (shocking I know).

When discussing what they could do differently, they decided to reuse the plastic bags by taking them home and asking parents to reuse them as well as washing out the plastic containers yogurt, apple sauces and fruit cups go into and recycling them instead of throwing them in the garbage.

They made some reasonable decisions I know they can follow through with. It would be great for you to have a conversation with them about how else you can reduce the amount of garbage thrown away.

Happy Earth Day 365 Days of the Year!

Some of them finally figured out what the lone Band-aid was doing way up on the wall beside the clock. I had many guesses like; it's holding the wall together, there is a crack and the Band-aid is holding it together and it has a sore. The students have been WONDERING since day one why it was up there and I couldn't tell them. I just left them guessing.

Well, when we started the Band-aid Investigation, I heard this loud cheer from one boy in particular, it went something like this, "YES!!! Now we get to find out why the band-aid is on the wall." Inside, I had to laugh because of how important that thing was to them. To be honest the real reason it was up there, wasn't to capture their attention but because I'm too lazy to take it off. Now I know they will be interested and wondering why it's there next year.

Here are some photos of us measuring the height of a giant in our classroom. If you look back to the beginning of this blog you'll see use trying to solve the height of the giant. He is 6 cubits and 1 span tall and the students have to show how tall he is at the beginning of the year.

Today they had to measure the giants height with the measuring tool they'd made with only one band-aid. You could have heard a pin drop in the room with how engaged they were.

The first time he was explaining it to me, he was far clearer and didn't get confused. The students were trying to figure out whether 33 groups of 3 penguins worked. The initial problem was trying to figure out how many ways 100 penguins could be organized into equal groups.

He knew you could reverse 33 groups of 3 penguins into 3 groups if 33. From there he added the 33's together to make 99. He has one penguin left over so this combination can't work.

Math reasoning is a huge component of our math curriculum. My goal in grade two is to get them to reason why a strategy or answer will or will not work. When this happens it's truly amazing to hear them thinking and being logical as to why it does or doesn't work. This boy clearly has mathematical reasoning for this particular problem. He understood that by switching or reversing the combinations, you could find other combinations.

We want them to be thinking about the reasons why it should work because of what the numbers can and can not do. This particular student isn't doing gobs and gobs of math worksheets, instead they are working in a problem based math classroom where it challenges him to think and reasoning. I love it when this happens, now I just need them all to do this :-).

As a class we had to find out how many different ways 60 penguins could be organized. When we first got started we were stuck on 2 or 3 ways. Ms. Brown told us to go and get Unifix cubes (blocks), this sure helped a lot. It worked much better for us. We then worked as a class to find 12 ways to organize the 60 penguins. We were surprised at all of the different ways.

I'm really happy with the decision. Kidblog is a much better platform to work with especially younger students. Here's how to add it to your devices.
You can also get to it from this blog, go to Favourite Links and click on 'Student Blogs' it will take you to the main page of the blog. If you decide to add this blog to your child's device here's how to do it.

1. Go to App Store and find Kidblog; it looks like this: It's also free.

2. Download the App and then open it up.
3. You'll get a screen that looks like this:
